2011-12 Champions League group stage set

25 Aug

After a tediously boring draw earlier today, the Champions League groups are ready to go for another year of action. Group A ended up as the toughest draw with Bayern Munich, Villarreal, Manchester City and Napoli. Of course, Barcelona and Manchester United have one team in each of their groups that could pose a challenge.  The first group games are set for Sept. 13-14 and the complete schedule can be found here.

Oh and in case you were wondering, Lionel Messi won the first UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, which was announced after the draw to the surprise of approximately no one.

Manchester United, Arsenal move on to Champions League semis

15 Apr

Manchester United only needed a goal in the 6th minute from Cristiano Ronaldo to hold off Porto, 1-0.  Manchester United advances 3-2 on aggregate.  Arsenal made it three English teams in the semis with a 3-0 victory over Villarreal.  The Gunners won 4-0 on aggregate.

Champions League Schedule – April 14 and 15

13 Apr

Tuesday, April 14

Chelsea vs. Liverpool – Chelsea won the first leg at Anfield, 3-1, so the Reds have some work to do if they want to advance.  Steven Gerrard is looking like he will be good to go for this one.  UPDATE: Gerrard will NOT play due to a lingering groin injury. Rafa Benitez hopes the team can use Istanbul as inspiration – 2:30 p.m. ET/ESPN2, ESPN360

Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona – Bayern is going to need a minor miracle if they hope to advance since Barcelona won the first leg 4-0 – 2:30 p.m. ET/ESPN Deportes, ESPN360

Wednesday, April 15

Arsenal vs. Villarreal – Arsenal holds the advantage going into the second leg after scoring a crucial equalizer in game one – 2:30 p.m. ET/ESPN Deportes, ESPN360

Porto vs. Manchester United – The teams fought out a 2-2 draw in the first leg, but Porto has the advantage due to away goals. – 2:30 p.m. ET/ESPN2, ESPN360

Champions League results – April 7

8 Apr

Manchester United 2 (Rooney 15, Tevez 85)
Porto 2 (Rodriguez 4, Mariano 89)

Manchester United looked quite shaky in this one and probably should’ve lost if not for a bad back pass that Wayne Rooney was able to take in for the early tying goal.  They have a rough task ahead of them if they want to advance to the semis; Porto has a solid home record and definitely looked like the better team yesterday.

Villarreal 1 (Senna 10)
Arsenal 1 (Adebayor 66)

It looked like it could be a very bad day for Arsenal as they went down 1-0 early and lost goalie Manuel Almunia and defender William Gallas before the halftime whistle.  Despite that, the Gunners were able to tie the game on a pretty sweet goal by Emmanuel Adebayor and now have the away goal advantage going into the second leg.

Liverpool to face Chelsea in Champions League quarterfinals

20 Mar

uefa_champions_leagueLiverpool will play Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal with the first leg at Anfield on April 8 and the second at Stamford Bridge on April 14.  It is the fifth straight year that the two clubs have met in Champions League play.  Chelsea defeated Liverpool in last year’s semifinals, but the Reds have done the double on Chelsea in the Premier League this season.

The rest of the draw
Manchester United vs. Porto
Villarreal vs. Arsenal
Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich

The winner of Manchester United/Porto will play the winner of Villarreal/Arsenal in the semis.  Liverpool or Chelsea will face the winner of Barcelona/Bayern Munich.  I’m going to say that Liverpool’s half of the draw is slightly more challenging – not only do the Reds have to try to knock off a fellow EPL team in the quarters, but Bayern has been playing extremely well (they beat Sporting 12-1 on aggregate in the last round!) and Barcelona, well, Barcelona has Lionel Messi, who has been absolutely phenomenal this year.  Needless to say though, just like the NCAA tournament that is going on right now, anything can happen.

In some good news for Livepool, skipper Steven Gerrard had assault charges dropped and will now face only the lesser charges of affray in court on April 3.
