Top of the table excitement

4 May

Sorry for the lack of posting, I’ve been back home for a wedding (which was wonderful, by the way).  Anyways, the Premier League season will come down to the final day.  Chelsea holds a one point lead over second place Manchester United with one match to play for each side.  A win for the Blues would give them the title, but a draw or loss opens up the possibility of Manchester United winning the title.  (I couldn’t write that with a straight face.  The thought of United with the title again is just horrible.)  Chelsea plays host to Wigan, while United will host Stoke. Both games are at the same time, so there won’t be the benefit of finding out a result ahead of time, although I’m sure both teams will be kept abreast of the other match.

Now on Wednesday, Manchester City and Tottenham will face off in a crucial battle for the fourth and final Champions League spot.  Spurs currently occupy that spot with 67 points, but Man City is only one point back.  Both teams will also play games on Sunday. Aston Villa could catch Tottenham on points, but Spurs would have to lose both games by quite a bit as they hold quite the advantage in goal difference.

It sucks that the Big Four has been broken up at Liverpool’s expense, but let’s be honest, they are rather crap this season.  It’s definitely good for the Premier League though to have some other teams break through the ceiling.  It lends more drama to the season knowing that it won’t be the same four teams at the top now.  Parity is a good thing and if even more teams are battling for spots in Europe next season, it should make for some exciting football.

At the bottom of the table, there will be no such drama.  Portsmouth, Burnley and Hull have already been relegated to the League Championship.

Prem going down to the wire

Man, talk about an exciting way to finish the season.  This is how every season needs to be with the title challenge going back and forth.  Ideally, the title will be decided on the final day of the season in dramatic fashion.  One slip up from either Chelsea or United could end the dream at this point.  It’s the same way in the race for fourth too, one slip up and you’re done.  Who’s going to get it done under pressure?

The race for the title is going down to the wire.  Chelsea leads the way by the slimmest of margins, only one point.  The Blues sit on 80 points while Manchester United is hot on their heels with 79.  United plays Sunderland and Stoke in their final two games while Chelsea plays away to Liverpool and hosts Wigan in the season finale.  Two wins for Chelsea would give them the title.

In addition to the title challenge, the race for fourth has picked up as well.  Tottenham (64), Manchester City (64), Aston Villa (63) and Liverpool (62) are all within two points of each other.  Currently, Tottenham holds the fourth and final Champions League spot.  Both City and Spurs have three games remaining, while the Reds and Villa have two each.  However, City has games against both Spurs and Villa.  Liverpool’s game against Chelsea could have implications on both races.

At the bottom of the table, Portsmouth has been relegated since forever.  They will be joined by Burnley after their 4-0 loss to Liverpool at the weekend.  Although not official, it’s looking like Hull will be the third team relegated.
