Inter wins Champions League title

22 May

Inter Milan won its first European trophy since 1965, knocking off Bayern Munich 2-0 in the final.  Diego Milito came up big for the Italian champions, scoring a goal in each half.

Thoughts & Observations:

  • Bayern absolutely dominated possession, but that doesn’t mean anything if you can’t score.
  • Inter didn’t get many chances, but they took advantage of the ones they did get.  Milito scored his two goals on his only two shots of the game.
  • Jose Mourinho is really good at what he does.  He’s now won Champions League titles with two different teams, not too shabby.
  • Esteban Cambiasso was a beast for Inter.  How the heck was he left out of the Argentina World Cup squad?
  • Inter exploited the Bayern defense with clinical precision.  On both goals, Milito was able to shoot because the defender ended up out of position.
  • Inter knocked off the champs of England (Chelsea), Spain (Barcelona) and Germany (Bayern), leaving absolutely no doubt about being the best team in Europe.
  • It was definitely not an extremely exciting game to watch, but Inter executed Mourinho’s game plan perfectly.
  • Bayern didn’t push the pace enough.  They spent too much time passing around the back instead of trying to find seams and make cuts into dangerous positions.  They played the game exactly how Inter wanted.
  • Diego Milito is a clutch perfomer.  He scored the winner in today’s final, the Italian Cup final and the league-clinching game.  He also looks like Rocky Balboa.  Milito could form a dangerous partnership with Lionel Messi in the World Cup.
