Onyewu extends contract for free

18 May

U.S. and AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu hasn’t played a game since October after suffering a knee injury in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.  After missing most of the Italian season, Gooch has extended his contract for a year without pay.  It’s being hailed by the club as “an exemplary gesture which deserves sincere congratulations.”

It’s an unusual move, especially at such a big club, but it’s not everyday an American plays for a team like Milan.  Gooch is essentially paying the club back for standing by him while he was out of commission.  It’s refreshing too because there’s so much money and so many divas in the game right now.  Major props for this decision, Mr. Onyewu.
