Inter dominates Barca, Bayern to host Lyon

21 Apr

Despite scoring the first goal, Barcelona could not hold on as Inter notched three straight scores for a 3-1 win in Milan. Pedro scored Barcelona’s lone goal in the 19th minute off a lovely pass from Maxwell. Wesley Sneijder equalized for Inter 11 minutes later. Maicon and Diego Milito tallied goals for Inter in the second half. Overall, it was a rather stunning result as no one (except perhaps Inter fans) expected the home side to put three past Victor Valdes. Inter did an excellent job of containing both Xavi and Messi as neither player had a huge impact on the game. Nicely done, Jose Mourinho. Barca did pick up a crucial away goal in the contest, but they will have to improve their defending and take better advantage of their chances if they want a shot at a second straight title. The second leg is set for Wednesday, April 28.

Bayern will host Lyon today in Champions League semifinal action. If you want to take stock in history, the last time Bayern played a French time (St. Etienne) in the semis, they won the European Cup. However, that really doesn’t matter one iota. Bayern has to be feeling confident after dispatching Manchester United in the quarterfinals, but beating Lyon is no easy task. Lyon goalie Hugo Lloris has only allowed six goals in 10 Champions League matches and hasn’t allowed more than one goal in any game.  Franck Ribery has been declared fit for today’s game, but the German side will be without suspended players Mark von Bommel and Holger Badstuber.  Lyon has no suspended players, but will be missing Jean Makoun,  Jean-Alain Boumsong  and Mathieu Bodmer to injury.  Striker Lisandro should start, despite picking up a slight ankle knock at the weekend.

Fox Soccer WILL televise this semifinal live.  Why this one and not yesterday’s, I have no idea.  The intensity at this stage in the competition is awesome, so it should be must-see TV (if you can get to one that is). Again, live video is available through for 10 bucks or you can always hunt it down online.
