Barcelona, Bordeaux advance to Champions League quarterfinals

18 Mar

Lionel Messi scored two spectacular goals to lead Barcelona to a 4-0 win over Stuttgart in their second leg contest.  The defending champs advance to the quarterfinals after winning 5-1 on aggregate.  Messi is a beast.  On his first goal, there were FOUR defenders around him and he had about a foot of space to shoot and he was able to unleash a rocket into the upper left corner.  Absolutely incredible.  Barcelona played a very solid game and if Messi continues to score like he has, I feel bad for their quarterfinal opponent.

Bordeaux notched its seventh straight Champions League win on Wednesday, defeating Olympiacos, 2-1.  The French side advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in 22 years.  The game wasn’t without drama though.  Olympiacos striker Matt Derbyshire got sent off in the 60th minute, but that didn’t stop the away side as they equalized minutes later.  The sides then were even at 10 men apiece after Alou Diarra was sent off for Bordeaux in the 68th minute.  The home team wouldn’t be denied however as Marouane Chamakh headed in the game-winner in the 88th minute.

The quarterfinalists are: Barcelona, Bordeaux, Arsenal, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Lyon, Inter and CSKA Moskva.  The quarterfinal draw will take place Friday, March 19 (that’s tomorrow for those of you that aren’t paying attention).
