US hosts El Salvador in World Cup qualifier tonight

5 Sep

The US men’s soccer team plays El Salvador tonight in a crucial World Cup qualifier.  The match kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN Classic.  The US currently sits in third place in CONCACAF and a win would go a long way towards ensuring the Americans a spot in South Africa.  In the first matchup between the teams in March in El Salvador, the US was able to salvage a 2-2 draw thanks to an 86th minute Frankie Hedjuk goal.

The US needs to start tonight’s game strong and put the pressure on El Salvador right away.  When the Americans come out with intensity and poise, it makes all the difference in the world.  They need to make smart passes and take advantage of opportunities in front of the goal. Plus, they are finally back on home soil and they always play better here.  The US will be without defender Oguchi Onyewu, who is suspended after picking up a yellow card against Mexico.

There’s also a huge game further south tonight between Mexico and Costa Rica.  The Mexicans head to Costa Rica high on confidence after beating their US arch rivals in the last qualifier.  Costa Rica currently leads the CONCACAF standings and has a stellar record on their home turf (literally, astroturf).  Honduras hosts Trinidad & Tobago in the other CONCACAF game.
