Quick Kicks

  • US midfielder Landon Donovan has tested positive for swine flu.  Apparently, he picked up the illness from a couple Galaxy staff members before joining the US national team for the World Cup qualifier against Mexico.  This might help explain why he didn’t have the best of games against Mexico.  Hope he’s 100% soon.
  • In happier news, Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has signed a new contract with the club.  The Spain international is now set to stay at Anfield through 2013 with an option to stay til 2014.  He will now make £110,000 ($181,600 U.S.) a week.  Torres has scored 50 goals in 84 appearances in two years at Anfield and with clubs like Manchester City sniffing around, it was an excellent move to lock up his future.
  • And back to not so great news, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard might miss out on the Premier League opener at Tottenham due to a groin injury.  Here’s hoping that if he does miss this game, it’s the only one.  Liverpool will definitely need him to stay healthy this year if they want to make a title run.
