US falls flat against Mexico in Gold Cup final

26 Jul

When the United States plays Mexico, it’s generally a very close, intense game.  Well, today’s Gold Cup final was close and intense…for the first half anyways.  It was tied 0-0 at half since both teams had missed a couple solid opportunities.  The second half, however, was a completely different story.  It was evenly matched to start the half, but Mexico opened the flood gates in the 57th minute, converting a dubious penalty.  Mexico scored FOUR more goals over the course of the last 30 minutes to beat the U.S. 5-0.  Yes, you read that right, Mexico scored five goals against the U.S.  It was a beat down to say the least.

The win will surely give Mexico loads more confidence going into the World Cup Qualifier against the U.S. in August.  The U.S., on the other hand, will need to use the humiliating loss as motivation against the hosts (where the U.S. has never won).
