US headed to Gold Cup semi-finals

20 Jul

The U.S. used a strong second half and extra time to defeat Panama, 2-1, in the Gold Cup quarterfinals.  Panama got on the board just before halftime, but the U.S. answered quickly in the second half when Kyle Beckerman equalized in the 49th minute.  The U.S. pretty much dominated the second half, but they were unable to find the back of the net for a gamewinner, which meant…extra time!  In the first extra time period, the U.S. looked like they were in control and ready to score.  It took a kick to the gut (literally) for the Americans to score.  After Kenny Cooper was kicked right in the stomach in the box, the ref awarded a penalty and Cooper nailed the spot kick.  The U.S. hung on for the victory and kept their unblemished record in the Gold Cup alive.

The Americans will now play Honduras (again) at Soldier Field in Chicago (again).  In June, the U.S. came from behind to defeat Honduras, 2-1, in a World Cup qualifier in Chicago.  Earlier this month, the two teams matched up in Gold Cup group play and the U.S. came away with a 2-0 victory.  The semifinal match will be played Thursday, July 23 at 7 p.m. ET and be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel.
