US to play Panama in Gold Cup quarters

15 Jul

While I was away, the U.S. defeated Honduras, 2-0, and tied Haiti, 2-2, to keep their unbeaten streak in the Gold Cup alive.  It also means that the Americans have advanced to the quarterfinals to play Panama.  It’s the third straight Gold Cup in which the U.S. will play Panama in the knockout stages.  In 2007, the U.S. defeated Panama, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals.  In the 2005 competition, the U.S. beat Panama in the final – winning 3-1 on penalties.

The young U.S. squad has put on a solid performance so far in the tournament – but several players have now left the squad for pre-season club training, including the influential Charlie Davies.  Also leaving were Freddy Adu, Benny Feilhaber, Steve Cherundolo and Michael Parkhurst.  At this rate, who will be left to compete?  Hopefully this will give some of the younger players a chance to shine and make a big contribution to U.S. soccer.

The U.S./Panama match kicks off at 8 p.m. ET in Philadelphia on Saturday, July 18.  It will be shown live on Fox Soccer Channel.  The other quarterfinals are as follows: Canada will play Honduras in Philadelphia prior to the U.S. game.  Gaudeloupe meets Costa Rica and Mexico plays Haiti in the other quarterfinals on Sunday.
