US still searching for first win in Costa Rica

3 Jun

Costa Rica dominated the United States, 3-1, in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, June 3. Costa Rica got on the board almost immediately, scoring a goal in the second minute. They scored a second goal midway through the first half. The third Costa Rican goal squashed any remote chance the US had of coming back.

The US never looked comfortable and never got in a groove. The passing wasn’t crisp and the US players were getting beaten to the ball. Michael Bradley looked especially out of sorts – allowing the Costa Rican player to walk right by him for the third goal – looked like lazy defending to me. DeMarcus Beasley played defense, which is clearly not where he belongs. Bradley also picked up a yellow card, which means he will not be playing against Honduras on Saturday. One very small bright spot for the US: Landon Donovan scored the team’s first goal in Costa Rica since July 23, 2000 (in second half stoppage time).

The US needs to move past this defeat and bounce back against Honduras on Saturday. (Since I will be there, I really hope to see a better performance.) Saturday’s game will be on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET.
