Barry signs with Manchester City

gareth barryAston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry signed a £12 million (US $7.2 million) five-year deal with Manchester City on June 2.  Manchester City finished 10th in the Premier League this season, Villa was sixth.  Barry is the latest signing by the new regime at Manchester City.  Several more big signings can be expected over the summer due to the influx of cash from the team’s new owners.  The City owners should take stock in the tale of Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder though: Money does not buy championships.  You can bring in all the big names with big money contracts, but if there is no chemistry and/or chemistry is not allowed to develop, the team will never compete at the top of the league.

Now this part is speculation, but the Barry deal will probably help keep Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso at Anfield.  Barry, a longtime Liverpool target, is now off the market, which means there would be no incoming replacement for Alonso if he left.  Alonso is a vital part of the Liverpool lineup and the club should do everything in their power to keep him in the red shirt.  Alonso has been linked to Real Madrid, among others.
