Liverpool’s stay at the top is all too short

Yossi Benayoun scored a late winner for Liverpool, giving them a 1-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday.  The win put the Reds at the top of the table for the first time in a good long while.  The joy at going top was short-lived though, as Manchester United left it just as late today.  Youngster Federico Macheda scored in the 92nd minute to give the Red Devils a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.  It’s a disappointing loss for Villa as they played well enough to earn a point, but obviously the loss hurts Liverpool as well since ManU still has a game in hand.

Despite the victory for ManU, they definitely didn’t look like the same team they were several weeks ago.  Their performances have been less than inspiring.  I realize they were missing key players (Rooney, Vidic, Scholes) through suspension, but even with them, looking less than impressive.  Their lackluster form gives hope to Liverpool and even Chelsea that the title race is not yet over.
