Fernando Torres has now scored three goals in his last two games, both of them huge wins for Liverpool.  Last weekend, he scored twice to lift the Reds to a 2-0 win over Chelsea and on Saturday, Feb. 7, he scored the game-winner over Pompey in the 92nd minute after coming on as a sub.

Now the starting lineup for Liverpool against Portsmouth was definitely not the A-team.  N’Gog, Babel, Benayoun all got the start. The squad did a good job controlling the game for the most part, but kept squandering chances around the box.  Steven Gerrard is out injured, but Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera were all on the bench for the visitors.  Torres, Alonso and Kuyt all came on midway through the second half and what did they produce?  Two assists and two goals and the victory.  There is a reason why they generally start.  All the headlines have been about Torres, but the Xabi-Nando-Dirk trio all deserve accolades for rejuvenating the team and leading them to a crucial win.

The win puts Liverpool one point up over Manchester United, who plays West Ham on Sunday.
