So today I went to an open house at the Fargo-Moorhead Curling Club. I have never tried curling, but I have watched it during the Olympics. So pretty much I know nothing about it.
As soon as I get there, they ask if I want to try it. Warning them I know nothing, a poor unsuspecting guy takes me out on the ice to give it a shot. Keep in mind, curling is done in sneakers, not on skates. He teaches me how to “throw the rock” first. He demonstrates the correct way to do it and then has me do it after about 30 seconds of instruction. Attempt 1: FAIL. I go sprawling on my face. Great start! Attempt 2: fail…not quite as badly. (still fall on my face). He shows me the correct technique again and I discover that I am pushing off the wrong foot. I try again and whoa! I did it right (not great, but correctly.) Poor unsuspecting guy then shows me how to put spin on the rock. While he’s talking, he uses a lot of curling terminology that I don’t know the definitions of (note to self: look up curling words online). Anyways, I’m not so hot at the spin thing. I throw the rock several more times after the guy has to leave. So, I don’t really ever “play” a game of curling (also, I need to learn the correct way to use the verb curling), but I like the throwing the rock part. I didn’t get a chance to do the broom part.
But I left my name and number for the women’s league. I’m excited to try a new sport (even if it is no contact).

I’m extremely impressed that you’ve given this a go. I don’t even know what you mean by throwing the rock, but it sounds dangerous and potentially painful. Maybe once you become an official Curler [Curlee? Curly? Curlinator?] you’ll be able to explain why it is that some people feel the need to propel a weight across a block of ice with brooms. Because I’ve always been lost on that.
YAY FOR BLOGS.
